#12

This was in fact one of the remarkable ELS projects done throughout the year, which we the committees held an annual movie review competition. The movie for this year was Avengers: Infinity War. So yeah I wrote something lol, a pretty superficial one, not your average convoluted (and flowery?) review aha.

Throughout Infinity War, the initially split up and scattered Avengers gather up with friends, and spend most of the time fighting against Thanos, who intends to destroy half the life in the universe for what are frankly economically unsound reasons. Thanos’s home planet was bountiful but resources were finite. To alleviate the stress on the planet in order to preserve it, Thanos had the idea to reduce it by half through a rather equitable way, which is eliminating life randomly regardless of one’s race, skin colour, background, social class etc.

To do so, he needs to collect all the six Infinity Stones. However, the Avengers do not agree with Thanos’s act. Therefore, they try their best to keep the Stones away from him or collect weapons they can use to defeat him. But in the end, the Avengers still couldn’t beat Thanos who is too formidable and powerful. Thanos manages to assemble all six Infinity Stones, survives Thor’s new magic hammer, and snaps his fingers to wipe out half the life in the universe. And one by one, about half the Avengers dissolve into dust and wink out of existence.

After watching this movie, I think that Thanos is the main key person to discuss about. I wouldn’t agree with his method of ‘saving the universe’, but I could also understand his motive from his point of view. He wants to solve the problem in a flash, and compel everything to be overly progressive. His purpose is actually for the good of mankind, and unlike the typical villians, he actually has a heart. On his road to success, he has no choice but to sacrifice his beloved daughter, Gamora, in order to get the Soul stone. I believe that he is deeply grieved and anguished to lose her. He has developed fatherly feelings towards Gamora, too, he has emotions just like everyone of us, causing his love for Gamora to become his weakness. He refuses to let this weakness to stop him, and thus he makes the painful decision and pushes Gamora off the cliff with tears in his eyes (Ahahahahha I'm not sure tho btw).

Nevertheless, there is a bug here, which his trepidation about ‘depletion of resources corresponding to the increase of population’ could actually be easily solved. In fact, birth control could possibly be applied, though it takes a rather longer time to produce the desired results.

Contrary to him, there is this Captain America, who is a person of principle. He respects human’s right, and thus he tells his compatriots: “We don’t trade lives.” He takes every single life as the precious asset of the universe and therefore he leads the Avengers together with Tony Stark to look for a solution which can stop the tragedy from happening, but failed. As Doctor Strange has said, “This is the only way.” He saw 14 millions of potential futures, yet he still chooses to give up the Time stone and let Thanos wins. Perhaps he knows something, but too, he knows they are unable to change the outcome.

I have never watched any Marvel movie before, and Infinity War actually contains a lot of Marvel shorthand, with an assumption of the audiences' prior knowledge of how important certain characters are and where they’ve been. Fortunately it has not been an obstacle for me to understand the storyline, and space operas featuring intergalactic threats, epic battles and gigantic fight scenes were indeed breathtaking for me!

In a nutshell, I deem that we shall not judge someone's act merely from the surface. They might have their own reasons of doing so from another perspective. Lastly, it was undeniably an enjoyable and incredible experience watching this film. I was surprised by the denouement though, as we, the audience always have the stereotype that 'good guys are ultimately victorious, they always win at the end’, especially in superheros’ movies, and they lost. But well……it has been annouced that the sequel of the Avengers' series is coming soon! We all are certain that, this is still not the end yet.
